The Bradford Hill considerations on causality: a counterfactual perspective

Bradford Hill's considerations published in 1965 had an enormous influence on attempts to separate causal from non-causal explanations of observed associations. These considerations were often applied as a checklist of criteria, although they were by no means intended to be used in this way by Hill himself. Hill, however, avoided defining explicitly what he meant by "causal effect". This paper provides a fresh point of view on Hill's considerations from the perspective of counterfactual causality. I argue that counterfactual arguments strongly contribute to the question of when to apply the Hill considerations. Some of the considerations, however, involve many counterfactuals in a broader causal system, and their heuristic value decreases as the complexity of a system increases; the danger of misapplying them can be high. The impacts of these insights for study design and data analysis are discussed. The key analysis tool to assess the applicability of Hill's considerations is multiple bias modelling (Bayesian methods and Monte Carlo sensitivity analysis); these methods should be used much more frequently

Getting causal considerations back on the right track

In their commentary on my paper Phillips and Goodman suggested that counterfactual causality and considerations on causality like those by Bradford Hill are only "guideposts on the road to common sense". I argue that if common sense is understood to mean views that the vast majority of researchers share, Hill's considerations did not lead to common sense in the past – precisely because they are so controversial. If common sense is taken to mean beliefs that are true, then Hill's considerations can only lead to common sense in the simple and well-understood causal systems they apply to. Counterfactuals, however, are largely common sense in the latter meaning. I suggest that the road of scientific endeavour should lead epidemiologic research toward sound strategies that equip researchers with skills to separate causal from non-causal associations with minimal error probabilities. This is undeniably the right direction and the one counterfactual causality leads to. Hill's considerations are merely heuristics with which epidemiologists may or may not find this direction, and they are likely to fail in complex landscapes (causal systems). In such environments, one might easily lose orientation without further aids (e.g., defendable assumptions on biases). Counterfactual causality tells us when and how to apply these heuristics

Der Ausbildungskostenrückersatz

Die vorliegende Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit der Thematik des Ausbildungskostenrückersatzes. Im österreichischen Rechtsbestand gab es bis vor Inkrafttreten des § 2d AVRAG keine gesetzliche Regelung zum Ausbildungskostenrückersatz. Die inhaltliche Ausgestaltung derartiger Arbeitsvertragsklauseln folgte den von Judikatur und Lehre entwickelten Grundsätzen. Die Dissertation beschäftigt sich am Beginn mit der Interpretation des, der Ausbildungskostenrückersatzregelung, zugrunde liegenden Begriffs der „Ausbildung“. Daran anschließend werden die wesentlichen Bausteine der Legaldefinition des § 2d AVRAG und die weiteren Absätze und Ziffern einzeln dargestellt. Dabei wird auch auf die zusätzlichen inhaltlichen (kompletten) Neuerungen eingegangen. Der zweite Teil der Arbeit befasst sich in einem weiteren Sinn damit, inwieweit die Kostentragung bereits aufgrund der besonderen Anforderungen des Arbeitsverhältnisses bzw aufgrund der besonderen Ausgestaltung des Arbeitsvertrages durch die analoge Anwendung des § 1014 ABGB determiniert werden kann. Es wird also letztlich die Frage behandelt, ob der Arbeitgeber unter besonderen Umständen die Ausbildungskosten seines Arbeitnehmers schon „per se“ zu finanzieren hat und wie groß der Spielraum für die Vereinbarung einer Kostenrückersatzklausel in diesen Fällen bleibt. Im dritten Teil der Arbeit wird die Thematik der Beschäftigungspflicht im Arbeitsverhältnis thematisiert. Es wird die Frage behandelt, in welchem Verhältnis ein mögliches Recht auf Beschäftigung bzw die Pflicht zur Beschäftigung zu einer Ausbildungskostenrückersatzklausel steht. Neben einer entsprechenden Einführung und Darstellung dieses Themenbereichs, wird insbesondere die in Österreich schon seit vielen Jahrzehnten geführte Diskussion über die rechtliche Her- bzw Ableitung einer Beschäftigungspflicht im Arbeitsverhältnis thematisiert. Die daran anschließende Abhandlung versucht die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Verknüpfung der beiden Rechtsmaterien aufzuzeigen

The use of weights to account for non-response and drop-out

Background: Empirical studies in psychiatric research and other fields often show substantially high refusal and drop-out rates. Non-participation and drop-out may introduce a bias whose magnitude depends on how strongly its determinants are related to the respective parameter of interest. Methods: When most information is missing, the standard approach is to estimate each respondent’s probability of participating and assign each respondent a weight that is inversely proportional to this probability. This paper contains a review of the major ideas and principles regarding the computation of statistical weights and the analysis of weighted data. Results: A short software review for weighted data is provided and the use of statistical weights is illustrated through data from the EDSP (Early Developmental Stages of Psychopathology) Study. The results show that disregarding different sampling and response probabilities can have a major impact on estimated odds ratios. Conclusions: The benefit of using statistical weights in reducing sampling bias should be balanced against increased variances in the weighted parameter estimates

Physical properties of single-crystalline Ba 8 Ni 3.5 Ge 42.1 h 0.4

Clathrates are candidate materials for thermoelectric applications because of a number of unique properties. The clathrate I phases in the Ba-Ni-Ge ternary system allow controlled variation of the charge carrier concentration by adjusting the Ni content. Depending on the Ni content, the physical properties vary from metal-like to insulator-like and show a transition from p-type to n-type conduction. Here we present first results on the characterization of millimeter-sized single crystals grown by the Bridgman technique. Single crystals with a composition of Ba8Ni3.5Ge42.1h0.4 show metallic behavior (dp/dT > 0) albeit with high resistivity at room temperature [p (300 K) = 1 mOhm cm]. The charge carrier concentration at 300 K, as determined from Hall-effect measurements, is 2.3 e-/unit cell. The dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit estimated at 680 K is ZT ~ 0.2.
